Notice biographique

Deanna B. George is a Tsleil-Waututh Nation Elder who has been weaving since 2009. Deanna started off doing baby blankets for her Nation's annual Baby Celebration; along with speaker blankets used for ceremonies.

From this beginning Deanna has expanded her craft into robes used as gifts, or to barter and as commissioned pieces.

One in particular would be the robe for BCIT. Deanna is happy to note that BCIT is implementing culture and setting the tone for incoming and outgoing presidents of BCIT by blanketing them with the BCIT robe.

Note

Artist statement: I wanted to ensure that weaving patterns were used, and that the designs were recognizable to indigenous people right away as a weaving design. I used the Salish Eye because it symbolizes – watching over you. To me, I know my ancestors are with me and watching over me.

The overall design is themed around life’s learning journey. I say life, as some people enter into university/specialized institutions right out of high school; where as some do it later in life.
The chevrons represent several paths. So, the chevrons could mean the path from starting out to completing your education (novice to a degree/certified), or it could be a change in path.

The pattern could also represent the ways that life’s journey is not just straight and easy – that there are curves, ups and downs. Or when you look at it perhaps it shows a beautiful journey – a journey that you learn from, represented by the triangles and diamonds.

In each of these paths you are weaving your past, present and what you want as a future -and one never knows until you get there.
