John Emes was primarily an instructor in Basic Health Science at BCIT. However, he left teaching to oversee the Technology Centre's Health Applied R&D program for a time in 1998. As noted in a 1995 issue of BCIT Update, in January 1994, together with Dr. David Johnson and Susan Knoll RN, BSN, Emes was contracted by the Medical Devices Bureau of Health Canada to develop regulatory standards for the manufacture and sale of ophthalmic viscoelastics. The resulting document they presented was then adopted by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), and Emes was appointed chair of the ANSI subcommittee on the subject. He was also one of the instructors involved with the ANIK-B Interactive Instructional Television Project.
